Earthquakes occur when vast plates, or rocks, within the Earth suddenly break or shift under stress, sending rippling shock waves.

Most earthquakes occur along edges of the Earth's major plates.  These edges are fractures in planet's crust called faults.

Earthquake waves are measured on sensitive instruments called seismographs.
