King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain sponsored Christopher Columbus's 1492 voyage to the New World.

In 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed from Palos, Spain, across the Atlantic Ocean and reached the Americas.

Christopher Columbus was commander of the ship Santa María on his first transatlantic voyage. Two other ships, the Niña and Pinta, also accompanied him on that voyage.
